I am not a regular watcher of the Sidemen. Fair to say, I’m not in the target demographic. However, as I noted in yesterday’s newsletter, the YouTube stars collaborated with the BBC for a watachalong of Ecuador vs Germany last night.
I tuned in for a bit.
There were quizzes and some kind of scavenger hunt, amongst all the chit-chat. I found it hard to follow. All a bit much.
Speaking to Sanny Rudravajhala on Track Radio earlier today, I described it as akin to sitting next to the annoying table whilst watching a game at a pub. Maybe that’s a bit unfair, but you get the point.
Again, I’m not the target audience.
Messing around at halftime, the conversation briefly turned to fatherhood. It quickly followed by more silliness, but was rather touching. A group of young men, being watched by other young men, dropping the facade, showing a small amount of vulnerability. Back to the pub analogy, it was all completely natural, the way a conversation would flow over pint. In fact, it was actually rather touching.
Far be it for me to tell men what they should want or need. However, that brief halftime interlude demonstrated the good these online communities can do, the support they can offer.
