The Traitors UK season three is over and it feels like it is the biggest one yet. This may just be down to my increased awareness, (I wrote previously that I had become obsessed with the show after tuning in for the first time,) but it does feel like a tipping point.
Whether it’s the late introduction of The Seer or the order in which players enter breakfast, there are some flaws in the format. However, it is still fantastic television, with the backstabbing, paranoia and drama escalating over the 12 episodes.
Given its growth, the players are now surely aware they will become high(ish)-profile figures when they leave the castle. Social media is a huge part of this, with TikTok and Instagram feeds filled with content from the contestants. Brand deals and other opportunities undoubtedly await the most compelling of them.
The fact that The Traitors is explicitly a game and the aim is to win money will keep the participants mostly honest about their intentions. However, some could go in knowing that the potential rewards go beyond the prize pot and alter their behaviour accordingly.
Changes to The Traitors
As time goes on producers feel compelled to shake things up. The Seer is the Casa Amore of The Traitors!
The introduction of that Seer power right at the end fundamentally altered the game. It allowed the holder to reveal the true identity of one player and gave the Faithful a much better chance of winning.
In the end, the final four were all Faithful after Frankie (accidentally) exposed Charlotte, the only remaining Traitor. It also meant that in all likelihood both she and Charlotte were going to be banished. After they went head-to-head with accusations against each other the other players could not risk either remaining.
Whether it be with celebrities or bringing together players from different seasons for a showdown, the development of other reality TV franchises indicates there is plenty more mileage for The Traitors still to travel. I’ll certainly be watching!
Now, all together… “sper ber yur, yur, yur”.
