On Friday night/Saturday morning Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will complete their epic trilogy. They are headlining the first all-female boxing card at Madison Square Garden. It’s a huge moment in the sport and a huge moment in streaming – it’s all going to be shown live on Netflix.
The pair did battle on Netflix last time, too, ahead of Jake Paul and Mike Tyson’s sham fight. This time, it’s ladies’ night. All eyes will be on them, and the streamer has taken a huge swing in broadcasting such a significant event. Can it show proper live sport without things crashing? Serrano vs Taylor 2 brought in 50 million viewers, making it (probably) the most viewed women’s sporting event ever. I’d be surprised if that number gets beaten this time, but everyone involved will want it to be close. Netflix wants to show it can bring in viewers, as does female boxing.
Taylor vs Serrano 3 and ITV and Disney+ Show Streaming’s Future
Meanwhile, ITV and Disney+ have announced a deal through which some of each other’s content will be made available cross-platform. We’re talking Mr Bates vs the Post Office and The Bear, Love Island and The Kardashians – things people might actually want to watch.
Obviously, both companies really want you to sign up for their service. However, the strategic partnership is also another step towards the rebundling that we are starting to hear so much about. There are only so many services any individual is willing to subscribe to, so deals are going to need to be done.
Karl Holmes, General Manager for EMEA at Disney+, told Deadline that he “expects we will announce similar deals with other broadcasters [across EMEA] in the coming months.” He added that “there will be lots of different models that achieve a similar outcome”.
So the future of streaming seems to be live sport and packages from different broadcasters… Sound familiar?
