Journalists, Check (Remember) Your Privilege

Spurs vs Man City pitchside

We all know journalism is in a tough spot right now. Frankly, can be a bit of a slog. However, sometimes you have moments that remind you what a great job this is and how lucky you are to do it.

I had one of those today.

I was in the press box for the Spurs vs Man City game in the WSL. It was a competitive, close match (thankfully,) and I was grateful to have the chance to watch it. Accreditation for such games also means I tend to get to speak to the managers and sometimes players after the final whistle. When Spurs play at Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road ground, as happened today, these interviews take place at the side of the pitch. (You can see the view in the picture above.)

On my way down, I asked a steward the best way to go. As I waved my press pass, a young fan noticed me heading towards the players and staff. I heard a little gasp of excitement behind me! She was clearly taken aback by how great it is to have such access.

As I prepared to wait in the cold to see if someone would come and chat to me, it was a nice reminder of what a privilege doing journalism is.
