The Bear and more: What I’m Watching and Reading – August 2024

The cast of The Bear

It’s been a summer packed full of sport and that has taken up much of my viewing time. Now the Premier League, La Liga and Seria A football is back too, with the WSL not far behind! When you need a break from all that action, there are plenty of great shows on the streaming services. And when you want to step away from a screen, I have some reading recommendations too.

What I’m Watching

Douglas is Cancelled (ITVX)

As the title suggests, this is a show about a TV news host called Douglas, played by Hugh Bonneville, who gets cancelled. Honestly, I nearly gave up after the first episode which I thought was rather naff and overdone. However, I stuck with it and each episode of the four got better and better. Episode three is particularly dark as we get an insight into co-host Madeline, brilliantly played by Karen Gillan. Very bingeable and worth seeing through to the end.

The Bear (Disney+)

I know… I know… you’re all on season three and I’m catching up with season one. However, I’m loving the show. It tells the story of a team trying to resurrect a Chicago restaurant after the death of its owner. The characters are fantastic, the writing subtle and the 30-minute episodes are beautifully paced.

What I’m Reading

Knots and Crosses – Sir Ian Rankin

Sir Ian Rankin is one of my favourite authors. So when I fancied a crime thriller there was only one place to go – back to the start of the Inspector Rebus series. From enthralling descriptions of Edinburgh to family feuds and romance, this novel packs it all in in a manner that never feels forced. It is a fantastic introduction to one of the great detective characters in crime fiction.

She-Hulk: Jensational – Rainbow Rowell

It will come as no surprise that I’m a comic book nerd, nor that She-Hulk is one of my favourite characters. (Please can we have another season, Disney?) This series is a fun dive into She-Hulk’s love life and her relationship with both The Avengers and her cousin, Hulk.
