I launched The Addition in February 2022, and as is often the case, it has undergone various iterations – including a name change just a month after launch! I think it’s now in the best shape it has ever been. I’m really proud of the product I have built – the format, the reporting, the podcast(s).
Nobody else in the UK is covering sports media with the focus I now do. I contribute more broadly to the cultural/media coverage here, too. Sadly, many mainstream publications have had to cut back on doing this reporting and analysis. Furthermore, I follow and report on what’s going on in the US very closely. The Addition provides a uniquely transatlantic slant on media coverage.
The data I get suggest readers appreciate all this. I am always keen to get your feedback, too. So drop me a line any time at charlotte@theaddition.net. Hearing from readers is great, so tell me what you want more or less of.
But now for the big reveal… As of today, The Addition does not have a paywall. I am hugely grateful to all those who took out subscriptions. I could not have got to this point without you. However, after four years of battling for paying subscribers, the numbers just don’t stack up. I think we have got to a point where people are fed up with being asked for another monthly payment. I understand that.
Removing a paywall does not mean I don’t value the work I do here. Quite the opposite. I want to find ways to get it to as many people as possible.
Here is how things will work moving forward. (As ever, I retain the right to change my mind, but I’m excited about this and think it’s good for readers and partners.)
- The newsletter will be free – you do have to register for it, of course.
- There will be more stories on theaddition.net. Some of these will require a free newsletter registration in order to read them. The site has been redesigned for that purpose!
- Super Supporters will remain, and I will provide all the updates on the advantages they get as time goes on.
Instead of subscriptions, there will be more adverts and sponsorship across all platforms. If you run a brand that wants to get in front of a growing, high-powered, engaged audience, drop me a line!
The lack of a paywall provides the time and space to cover more and produce more on different platforms. As I say, I think it should be better for me, my audience and commercial partners.
Thank you, as always, for reading and supporting The Addition. And if you’re not signed up to the newsletter, please do so now!
