Netflix ended its Basic plan in the UK and the US on Wednesday. The streamer said that those currently on the £6.99/$9.99 per month plan can “remain on this plan until you change plans or cancel your account,” but it is not available “for new or rejoining members” Variety reported.
This is obviously part of Netflix’s drive to get customers to either pay more or watch ads. As Sean McNulty noted in The Wakeup, the move is not much of a surprise. The company made a similar decision in Canada recently. The Basic with Ads tier costs £4.99, although some content is not available for customers on that plan.
Netflix will reveal its Q2 results today. It will be interesting to see if we get any updated information on how many people are subscribed to the ad tier. In May, the streamer said 5 million people had subscribed to it, per The Verge.
