The new Netflix ad-supported tier is going live today – Thursday 3rd November. In the UK, the Basic with Adverts plan will cost £4.99 a month while in the USA it will be $6.99 a month. As discussed on a recent episode of The Addition podcast with Adweek‘s Catherine Perloff, there will not be a huge amount of ads per hour of programming and premium brands want to be part of it.
I suspect the lower price point is going to be appealing to lots of users. A few things to remember though before you downgrade your subscription. Video quality is only up to 720p/HD on both the Basic and Basic with Adverts plans. Certain films and TV series will be unavailable to those who take out the ad-supported tier as a result of licensing restrictions. Netflix says it is looking to fix this. Users will also be unable to download content.
Netflix Basica With Adverts will initially be available in:
- Australia
 - Brazil
 - Canada
 - France
 - Germany
 - Italy
 - Japan
 - Korea
 - Mexico
 - Spain
 - UK
 - United States
