Millions Tune in as England Beat Sweden in Penalty Shootout

Lucy Bronze in England shirt celebrates after beating Sweden in Euro 2025 quarter-final.

The Sweden vs England penalty shootout, in which the Lionesses eventually triumphed, was viewed by millions, according to the BBC. The Euro 2025 quarter-final clash got a peak audience of 7.4 million and a peak audience share of 65%.

In the digital realm, 8.3 million went to the BBC’s livetext page. (Why they were not at The Addition live blog I have no idea.) The BBC also says that the key 16-35 demographic was engaged, with half a million streams to the post-match analysis. This had to be moved to iPlayer because the evening news did actually have to be shown at some point! Usually airing at 10pm, it was nearly 11pm before the Sweden vs England match and penalty shootout was all wrapped up.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, said:

I was biting my nails on the sofa with the rest of the fans. What a win for the Lionesses! We can’t wait for Tuesday. We’ll be bringing fans closer to the action with full commentary and analysis on BBC Radio 5 Live, the BBC Sport website, and the BBC Sport app.

Weird. I thought nobody watched women’s sport…
